Each Easter, in the hilltop village of Heptonstall, West Yorkshire, an ancient play is re-enacted.
It’s a tale of death and rebirth, life and continuity, harking back to medieval times, but with its roots in pagan ritual.
Characters such as St. George, Bold Slasher, the Black Prince and Hector drink and battle together on the cobbles of the village in the shadow of the old, abandoned church, whilst the fool and fertility symbol, Toss Pot, dances amongst the crowd, handing out eggs to the women of the audience.
This short films captures the event – its mystery, its comedy and its downright drunkenness.
